Designing Grafito's Blacksmith

In this article, I'd like to share the design process behind the Blacksmith, one of the characters from my game, Grafito.

One of the most important decisions I made was to have every villager share the same base body as Grafito. This helps reinforce the feeling that everyone truly belongs to the same world.

Instead of creating completely different characters, each profession is defined by just a handful of carefully chosen elements that make every villager immediately recognizable.

The Blacksmith Character
I spent some time exploring different variations of the Blacksmith before settling on a direction that felt right.
Sketching the Character
Rather than designing the entire character at once, I began by sketching each accessory and identifying the elements that best communicated the profession.

For the Blacksmith, I experimented with several ideas before realizing that only four key elements were needed to make the character instantly recognizable:

  • 🔨 Hammer
  • 🧤 Large protective glove
  • 🥽 Safety goggles
  • 🦺 Leather apron
This is the first version of the Blacksmith concept.

I'm really happy with how the village is starting to feel like a true community, where every character shares the same visual language while still having their own unique personality.
